Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Faro | Olhao Fish Market | Ria Formosa Natural Park | Faro Old Town

Arrive at Faro Airport and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at the Olhao fish and produce market, one of the finest traditional markets in the Algarve, built in 1912 with Moorish-influenced tiled towers. Take a short ferry trip into the Ria Formosa natural park, a lagoon system of barrier islands behind Faro with flamingos, wading birds, and extraordinary Atlantic light. Evening walk through Faro's walled old town with its cathedral and Roman walls. Overnight Faro area.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Ria Formosa ferry trips to Culatra and Armona islands run several times daily from Olhao. Both islands have beautiful beaches with no cars and very few tourists.
Day 2

Lagos | Sea Caves Boat Tour | Praia Dona Ana | Sagres Fort

Drive one hour west to Lagos, the most beautiful town on the Algarve coast. Morning boat tour from the Lagos harbour through the extraordinary sea caves, sea arches, and golden limestone rock formations of the Ponta da Piedade headland, completely inaccessible from land. Afternoon at Praia Dona Ana, one of Portugal's most beautiful beaches tucked between ochre cliffs. Late afternoon drive to Sagres, the southwestern tip of continental Europe, for the dramatic 16th-century fort above the ocean and a sunset over the Atlantic. Overnight Lagos.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Ponta da Piedade boat tour is the finest sea cave experience on the Algarve. Take it in the morning when the sea is calmest and the light enters the caves from the east.
Day 3

Praia da Bordeira | Cliffs of Luz | Drive to Evora

Morning at Praia da Bordeira near Carrapateira, a long surf beach in the Costa Vicentina natural park, the most unspoiled coastline in southern Portugal. Walk the clifftop paths above the Atlantic before driving three hours north through the cork forest plains of the Alentejo to Evora. Evening walk through Evora's medieval walls to the Roman Temple, a remarkably intact 2nd-century temple rising from the hilltop city centre. Overnight Evora.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Alentejo region between the Algarve and Evora produces some of Portugal's best red wines from the Alicante Bouschet grape. Stop at a roadside adega for a tasting on the way north.
Day 4

Evora | Roman Temple | Cathedral | Chapel of Bones | Megalithic Sites

Full morning in Evora, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Portugal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Gothic cathedral and climb to the roof for views over the Alentejo plains stretching to the horizon. The Chapel of Bones in the Igreja de Sao Francisco, decorated with the skulls and bones of 5000 monks, is extraordinary and unsettling in equal measure. Afternoon drive to the megalithic sites around Evora, including the Almendres Cromlech, a stone circle of 95 granite menhirs older than Stonehenge. Overnight Evora.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Almendres Cromlech is 15 kilometres from Evora on a dirt road. It receives almost no visitors and the atmosphere at sunrise or sunset among the ancient standing stones is extraordinary.
Day 5

Drive to Coimbra | University | Library | Mondego River

Three-hour drive north through the Alentejo plains to Coimbra, Portugal's medieval university city and the country's capital for over a century. Afternoon at the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, culminating in the Biblioteca Joanina, the most ornately decorated library in the world with frescoed ceilings and floor-to-ceiling baroque shelves stuffed with 300,000 books. Evening along the Mondego River for a traditional Coimbra fado performance. Overnight Coimbra.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Biblioteca Joanina requires timed entry booked in advance. Only a small number of visitors are admitted at a time due to the delicate microclimate that preserves the ancient books.
Day 6

Drive to Douro Valley | Terraced Vineyards | Quinta Visit | River Boat

Two-hour drive north to the Douro Valley, the world's oldest demarcated wine region. Drive the spectacular N222 road, named the world's most beautiful drive by a major motoring publication, along the Douro River gorge with UNESCO-listed terraced vineyards on every slope. Visit a family-run quinta for a guided vineyard tour and tasting of local wines and the famous port. Afternoon boat trip on the Douro between the ancient schist villages. Overnight Pinhao or Peso da Regua.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The N222 between Regua and Pinhao is the finest section of the Douro drive. Allow three hours to cover the 25 kilometres and stop at every viewpoint.
Day 7

Douro Valley Morning | Drive to Porto | Ribeira and Port Wine Cellars

Morning walk through the vineyards and along the river before the 90-minute drive to Porto. Afternoon crossing the Luis I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia for port wine cellar tours and tastings. Evening walk through the Ribeira waterfront, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the old wine warehouse facades reflected in the Douro at dusk. Dinner at a traditional taberna on the riverfront. Overnight Porto.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Arrive in Porto in time for the late afternoon light on the Ribeira. The colours of the painted house facades and the double-decker iron bridge reflected in the water at golden hour are extraordinary.
Day 8

Porto | Sao Bento Station | Clery dos Clerigos Tower | Bolhao Market | Departure

Final morning at the Sao Bento railway station to see the famous azulejo tile murals. Climb the Clerigos Tower for the definitive Porto rooftop view. Last shopping at the Bolhao Market for regional cheese, wine, and embroidered linen. Transfer to Porto Airport for your departure. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Buy the Clerigos church and tower combined ticket. The church interior with its gilded baroque altarpieces is worth seeing alongside the tower view.
