Day 1
Arrive Nairobi | Drive to Amboseli | First Kilimanjaro View
Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and drive directly four hours south to Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Arrive in the late afternoon for your first view of Africa's highest mountain rising 5895 metres above the flat savannah, its glaciers catching the last light of day. Check in to your lodge and listen to the sounds of the bush after dinner. Overnight Amboseli.
π‘ Tip: Kilimanjaro is most visible in the early morning before clouds build around the summit by mid-morning. Request a lodge with a direct mountain view from the main terrace.
Day 2
Amboseli Full Day | Elephant Herds | Kilimanjaro Dawn | Observation Hill
Dawn game drive when Kilimanjaro is clearest and the largest free-ranging elephant herds in East Africa move through the swamp margins below the mountain. Amboseli has the highest density of large elephant bulls in Kenya, completely habituated to vehicles and approachable at close range for extraordinary photography. Climb Observation Hill in the late morning for a panoramic view over the entire park, the Kilimanjaro massif, and the Amboseli Swamps. Overnight Amboseli.
π‘ Tip: Amboseli elephant bulls are incredibly calm around vehicles. Your driver-guide can park within 20 metres of a large bull for photography without causing any disturbance.
Day 3
Amboseli Morning Drive | Cheetah and Lion Search | Drive to Tsavo West
Final dawn drive in Amboseli for last Kilimanjaro views and a cheetah search on the open plains. Drive three hours north to Tsavo West National Park, one of Kenya's largest and least-visited reserves. Afternoon game drive around the Mzima Springs, extraordinary volcanic springs where crystal-clear water emerges from ancient lava fields, with hippos and crocodiles visible through an underwater observation window. Overnight Tsavo West lodge.
π‘ Tip: The Mzima Springs underwater observation chamber gives a genuinely unique view of hippos moving underwater and crocodiles resting on the bottom in extraordinary clarity.
Day 4
Tsavo West Full Day | Shetani Lava Flow | Chyulu Hills View
Full day in Tsavo West beginning with a dawn game drive for lions, leopards, and the famous red-coated Tsavo elephants that coat their grey skin with red laterite dust. Morning walk across the Shetani Lava Flow, a vast field of black volcanic rock from an eruption only 200 years ago, with the Chyulu Hills rising above. The park has the highest density of black rhinos in Kenya in a dedicated sanctuary. Overnight Tsavo West lodge.
π‘ Tip: Tsavo West receives far fewer visitors than Amboseli or the Mara. The sense of wilderness and the sheer size of the park make game drives feel genuinely exploratory.
Day 5
Drive to Mombasa | Old Town | Fort Jesus | Diani Beach Arrival
Drive four hours to the coast. Stop in Mombasa for the 16th-century Fort Jesus, a Portuguese fortification on the edge of the Indian Ocean, and a walk through the atmospheric Old Town with its carved Arab-Swahili wooden doors and narrow streets. Continue one hour south across the Likoni ferry to Diani Beach, ranked the best beach in Africa multiple years running. Check in to your beachfront resort on the finest stretch of white sand. Overnight Diani Beach.
π‘ Tip: The Likoni Ferry is free for pedestrians and the views of the Mombasa harbour are excellent. Drive your vehicle onto the ferry and walk to the upper deck for the crossing.
Day 6
Diani Beach | Snorkeling at Kisite Marine Park | Dolphin Watching
Morning boat trip 40 kilometres south to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, the finest coral reef in Kenya, for snorkeling over pristine hard and soft coral gardens with turtles, dolphins, and hundreds of tropical fish species. The park is a dolphin sanctuary and bottlenose and spinner dolphins regularly bow-ride the boat. Afternoon return to Diani for a long beach afternoon with swimming on the shallow reef-protected turquoise lagoon. Overnight Diani Beach.
π‘ Tip: Kisite Marine Park is best visited between October and March when visibility is highest and the sea is calmest. Book a trip with a certified operator rather than beach touts.
Day 7
Colobus Conservation | Shimba Hills Forest | Sunset Dhow Cruise
Morning visit to the Colobus Conservation Centre on the beach road, a rehabilitation centre for the rare Angolan colobus monkeys that inhabit the coastal forest behind Diani. Afternoon drive to Shimba Hills National Reserve, a coastal forest reserve with the only known population of sable antelope in Kenya and excellent elephant viewing. Evening traditional dhow sunset cruise along the Diani coastline with fresh seafood dinner on board. Overnight Diani Beach.
π‘ Tip: The Colobus Conservation centre runs guided tours that show the monkeys in their forest habitat above Diani Beach. It is one of the best wildlife encounters on the Kenyan coast.
Day 8
Final Beach Morning | Drive to Mombasa Airport | Departure
Final morning swim in the Indian Ocean on one of the finest beaches in Africa. Drive one hour to Mombasa Moi International Airport or take the 45-minute SGR train to Nairobi for an international connection. Pick up Kenyan coffee, Maasai jewellery, and kikoi fabric as the finest local souvenirs. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: The Madaraka Express SGR train from Mombasa to Nairobi departs twice daily and takes approximately four and a half hours. Book in advance at madarakaexpress.com for guaranteed seating.
