Day 1
Arrive Bangkok | Wat Pho | Chao Phraya River | Khao San Road Area
Arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at Wat Pho, home to the 46-metre golden reclining Buddha and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. Walk along the Chao Phraya riverbank and take a long-tail speedboat through the Bangkok canals behind the Grand Palace. Evening in the Banglamphu neighbourhood around Khao San Road for the street food, local restaurants, and lively atmosphere of Bangkok's most famous backpacker district. Overnight Bangkok.
π‘ Tip: Wat Pho is significantly less crowded than the Grand Palace next door but equally impressive. Book a traditional massage at the temple massage school for 260 baht, one of the best-value experiences in Bangkok.
Day 2
Bangkok | Grand Palace | Wat Arun | Jim Thompson House | Chatuchak
Early morning at the Grand Palace for the Emerald Buddha at Wat Phra Kaew before the crowd builds. Cross the river to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, a remarkable prang tower encrusted with Chinese porcelain and coloured glass that catches the light at any time of day. Afternoon at the Jim Thompson House, the beautiful traditional Thai house compound of the American silk entrepreneur, for a glimpse of traditional Bangkok domesticity. If it is a weekend, evening at Chatuchak Weekend Market. Overnight Bangkok.
π‘ Tip: Dress appropriately for all temple visits in Bangkok. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Keep a lightweight scarf in your bag for unexpected temple visits throughout Thailand.
Day 3
Fly to Chiang Mai | Old City Temples | Night Market | Khao Soi Dinner
Morning flight to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Afternoon bicycle tour through the old walled city visiting Wat Chedi Luang with its partially ruined Lanna-era chedi and the monastery's famous monk chat program, and Wat Phra Singh with its distinctive northern Thai temple architecture. Evening at the Sunday Walking Street night market on Wualai Road if the day falls right, or the Saturday Night Market on the same street. Dinner at a local restaurant for khao soi, the northern Thai coconut curry noodle soup that is completely unique to Chiang Mai. Overnight Chiang Mai.
π‘ Tip: Khao soi is the dish that defines Chiang Mai's cuisine and it cannot be found in this form anywhere else in Thailand. Try Khao Soi Khun Yai or Khao Soi Lam Duan Fah Ham, both legendary local spots.
Day 4
Doi Suthep | Elephant Sanctuary | Evening Cooking Class
Morning drive up to Doi Suthep, the sacred temple on the mountain above Chiang Mai, reached by 306 steps flanked by naga serpent balustrades or a funicular, with extraordinary views over the city and surrounding rice plains. Afternoon at an ethical elephant sanctuary where rescued working elephants roam freely in forest and visitors feed, walk alongside, and bathe with the elephants in a river with no riding whatsoever. Evening traditional Thai cooking class at a local school for pad thai, green curry, and mango sticky rice. Overnight Chiang Mai.
π‘ Tip: Doi Suthep is most beautiful in the early morning when mist fills the valleys below and the gilded chedi reflects the rising sun. Go before 8 AM for the most atmospheric visit.
Day 5
Drive to Pai | Mae Hong Son Loop | Hot Springs | Pai Canyon
Three-hour drive northwest on the Mae Hong Son Loop through 762 mountain curves to Pai, a small bohemian valley town at 800 metres surrounded by hill tribe villages. Visit the natural hot springs at Tha Pai for an outdoor soak in a jungle setting. Walk the bamboo bridge over the rice fields and watch the afternoon light. Sunset at Pai Canyon, narrow sandstone ridges above the valley with views over the mountains. Overnight Pai.
π‘ Tip: The road from Chiang Mai to Pai through the mountains has 762 curves and takes three hours. Take motion sickness tablets if you are prone to car sickness. The scenery makes it completely worth it.
Day 6
Drive to Chiang Rai | White Temple | Blue Temple | Golden Triangle
Drive two hours north to Chiang Rai through the mountain countryside. Visit Wat Rong Khun, the extraordinary White Temple by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, a surreal gleaming white structure covered in mirrored glass that is simultaneously a Buddhist temple and a contemporary art installation. Continue to the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, with its vivid cobalt interior. Afternoon drive to the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the Mekong River. Overnight Chiang Rai.
π‘ Tip: The White Temple is being expanded and part of the complex may be under construction. The main building is always open. Arrive early in the morning for the best light on the white surfaces.
Day 7
Chiang Rai | Hill Tribe Village | Long Neck Karen Community | Fly to Bangkok | Departure
Morning visit to a hill tribe village near Chiang Rai for a respectful cultural encounter with the Karen, Akha, or Hmong communities that have inhabited these mountains for centuries. Drive to the Long Neck Karen community at Ban Huay Pu Keng on the Mekong for the most memorable cultural encounter in northern Thailand. Fly from Chiang Rai back to Bangkok for your international departure. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: Choose hill tribe tours run by community-based organisations rather than commercial operators. The revenue goes directly to the communities and the interactions are significantly more authentic.
