Day 1
Arrive Brussels | Grand Place | Manneken Pis | Chocolate Shops | Waffles
Arrive at Brussels Airport and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at the Grand Place, one of Europe's most beautiful medieval squares with its ornate Gothic Town Hall and guild houses covered in gold leaf. Walk to the Manneken Pis, the famous small bronze statue of a urinating boy that Brussels has been inexplicably proud of for 400 years. Browse the chocolate shops on Rue au Beurre for Godiva, Neuhaus, and Pierre Marcolini. Eat a proper Brussels waffle with strawberries. Overnight Brussels.
π‘ Tip: Belgian chocolate is genuinely the world's finest - visit a traditional chocolatier like Mary or Marcolini rather than the tourist shops for the best quality pralines.
Day 2
Brussels | Royal Museums of Fine Arts | Sablon Quarter | Beer Tasting
Morning at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, home to extraordinary Flemish Primitive works by van Eyck, Memling, and Bruegel alongside Rubens and Magritte. Afternoon in the Sablon neighbourhood, Brussels's most elegant quarter, for antique shops, chocolate ateliers, and the weekend antique market on the square. Evening Belgian beer tasting at Moeder Lambic, with over 100 Belgian beers on tap including Trappist ales brewed by monks. Overnight Brussels.
π‘ Tip: Belgium has over 1500 different beers including Trappist ales, lambics, and gueuzes that are completely different from anything brewed elsewhere in the world.
Day 3
Train to Bruges | Canal Boat Ride | Belfry Tower | Chocolate Museum
45-minute train to Bruges, Belgium's best-preserved medieval city and arguably the most beautiful city in northern Europe. Morning canal boat ride through the network of waterways past Gothic houses, arched bridges, and swan-lined canals. Climb the 366 steps of the Belfry tower for panoramic views over the Flemish countryside. Afternoon at the Choco-Story chocolate museum with a tasting workshop. Evening candlelit dinner in a historic canal-side restaurant. Overnight Bruges.
π‘ Tip: Bruges gets very crowded with day visitors between 10 AM and 4 PM - stay overnight to experience the city in the morning and evening when it is magical and quiet.
Day 4
Bruges | Groeningemuseum | Basilica of the Holy Blood | Ghent Day Trip
Morning at the Groeningemuseum for Jan van Eyck's masterpiece The Mystic Lamb and extraordinary Flemish Primitive paintings. Visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood, which claims to hold a cloth stained with the blood of Christ in a jewelled reliquary. Afternoon train to Ghent for Saint Bavo Cathedral, the famous Ghent Altarpiece by van Eyck, and the three medieval towers along the Graslei canal. Return to Brussels. Overnight Brussels.
π‘ Tip: The Ghent Altarpiece in Saint Bavo Cathedral is one of the most important paintings in Western art history - the recently restored panels are now displayed in a purpose-built viewing room.
Day 5
Antwerp | Fashion District | Diamond Quarter | Cathedral | Departure
Morning train to Antwerp, Belgium's most dynamic city and the world's diamond capital. Walk through the fashion district around the Nationalestraat for Belgian designer shops. Visit the Antwerp Cathedral with its Rubens altarpieces and spectacular Gothic interior. Browse the Diamond District where 80 percent of the world's rough diamonds are traded. Return to Brussels for your departure. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: Antwerp is the birthplace of Pieter Paul Rubens - his house museum and the cathedral altarpieces he painted are the two essential visits in the city.
