Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Cape Town | V and A Waterfront | Signal Hill Sunset

Arrive at Cape Town International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at the V and A Waterfront, the beautifully restored Victorian harbour with restaurants, craft markets, and the Nobel Square memorial. Walk up Signal Hill in the late afternoon for a free panoramic sunset over the Atlantic Ocean with the city bowl and Table Mountain behind you. Dinner at the Waterfront seafood restaurants. Overnight Cape Town.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The best Cape Town hotel location for first-time visitors is the V and A Waterfront area or the City Bowl beneath Table Mountain. Both give easy access to all the main attractions.
Day 2

Table Mountain | Kirstenbosch Gardens | Camps Bay Beach

Morning cable car up Table Mountain for 360-degree views over Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula, and both oceans from the flat summit plateau. Walk several of the short summit trails before cabling back down. Afternoon at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, one of the world's great gardens built on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, with a spectacular treetop canopy walkway. Late afternoon at Camps Bay Beach backed by the Twelve Apostles mountain range. Overnight Cape Town.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Table Mountain is cloud-covered on many days. Check the weather forecast the evening before and have a flexible morning plan. The mountain is most often clear before 10 AM.
Day 3

Cape Peninsula | Boulders Beach Penguins | Cape of Good Hope | Chapman's Peak

Full day drive down the Cape Peninsula along the Atlantic coast. Stop at Boulders Beach to walk among the colony of over 3000 African penguins that nest on the beach among the granite boulders. Continue to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and hike or take the funicular to the cliff viewpoint above the churning ocean. Drive back via Chapman's Peak, one of the world's most dramatic coastal roads carved into a cliff face above the sea. Overnight Cape Town.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Chapman's Peak Drive sometimes closes due to rockfalls. Check the status the day before and ask your hotel for an alternative route if it is closed.
Day 4

Cape Winelands | Stellenbosch Wine Estates | Franschhoek Wine Tram

Drive 45 minutes to Stellenbosch, the heart of South African wine country, for morning tastings at two or three estates set among oak-lined streets. Afternoon hop on the Franschhoek Wine Tram, a vintage open-sided tram connecting the valley's best wineries over a beautiful route through vineyards and mountains. Return to Cape Town for a farewell dinner at a Kloof Street restaurant. Overnight Cape Town.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Franschhoek Wine Tram must be booked at least one day in advance online. It fills completely in season and cannot be booked on the day.
Day 5

Drive to Hermanus | Whale Watching | Cliff Path Walk

Drive two hours along the coast to Hermanus, the self-declared whale watching capital of the world. Between June and November southern right whales come close to shore to calve in Walker Bay. Walk the famous Cliff Path along the rocky shoreline above the ocean for close views from land. Optional whale watching boat trip with a certified operator. Evening sundowners at the Old Harbour with whales visible below. Overnight Hermanus or Knysna.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Southern right whales are present from June to November with September being the peak month. Outside this period Hermanus is still beautiful but the whales are gone.
Day 6

Knysna Lagoon | Knysna Heads | Featherbed Nature Reserve

Drive along the Garden Route to Knysna, a beautiful lagoon town surrounded by indigenous forest. Take a ferry trip through the famous Knysna Heads, two dramatic sandstone cliffs flanking the narrow passage from the lagoon to the sea. Afternoon at the Featherbed Nature Reserve on the western head, accessible only by ferry, for a short walk through fynbos and coastal forest with extraordinary views. Overnight Knysna or Plettenberg Bay.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Knysna Heads ferry trip is the essential Knysna experience. Book the Featherbed ferry in advance as tours are limited to small groups.
Day 7

Tsitsikamma Suspension Bridge | Storms River | Drive back to Cape Town

Morning at Tsitsikamma National Park for the spectacular suspension bridge walk across the Storms River mouth gorge, one of South Africa's most dramatic coastal landscapes with the river cutting through ancient cliffs to meet the Indian Ocean. Optional short kayaking trip into the gorge. Drive back to Cape Town airport or fly from George Airport. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: George Airport is 65 km from Knysna and offers direct flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg, saving the five-hour drive back along the N2.
