Day 1
Arrive Helsinki | Design District | Market Square | Sauna
Arrive at Helsinki Airport and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon in the compact city centre starting at the Market Square on the harbour with its stalls of fresh fish and Finnish strawberries. Walk through the Design District for Finnish design stores, galleries, and the Marimekko flagship shop. Evening at Loyly, the city's most famous public sauna on the waterfront with a plunge into the Baltic Sea. Overnight Helsinki.
π‘ Tip: Finnish sauna culture is genuine and important - accept any invitation to a sauna, always shower before entering, and alternate between heat and the cold lake or sea.
Day 2
Helsinki | Suomenlinna Sea Fortress | Temppeliaukio Church | Fly to Rovaniemi
Morning ferry to Suomenlinna, the UNESCO-listed sea fortress on islands in the Helsinki harbour, a fascinating military and civilian community built in the 18th century. Visit Temppeliaukio Church, the Rock Church blasted from solid granite with a copper dome - one of the world's most extraordinary architectural spaces. Afternoon flight to Rovaniemi in the Arctic Circle. Overnight Rovaniemi.
π‘ Tip: Rovaniemi is right on the Arctic Circle at 66 degrees north - in December and January the sun does not rise at all, and in summer it does not set.
Day 3
Rovaniemi | Santa Claus Village | Arktikum Museum | Northern Lights Hunt
Morning at Santa Claus Village on the exact line of the Arctic Circle - meet Santa, send a letter with the official Arctic Circle postmark, and cross the circle marker on foot. Afternoon at the Arktikum Museum for Finnish Lapland's extraordinary natural and cultural history. Evening snowmobile excursion into the dark Arctic forest for the Northern Lights, guided by a local expert who knows the best viewing spots. Overnight Rovaniemi.
π‘ Tip: Northern Lights are visible on clear nights between September and March - the best conditions are a clear sky, temperatures below minus 10, and locations away from city light pollution.
Day 4
Husky Safari | Reindeer Sleigh Ride | Ice Fishing
Full activity day in the Lapland wilderness. Morning husky safari mushing your own team of Siberian huskies through snow-covered boreal forest - the dogs are the most enthusiastic part of your entire trip. Afternoon reindeer sleigh ride through the forest with a Sami reindeer herder who explains the traditional herding culture. Late afternoon ice fishing on a frozen lake, drilling through a metre of ice and dropping a line for perch and pike. Overnight Rovaniemi or Saariselka.
π‘ Tip: Huskies are incredibly powerful and pull from the first second - lean back on the sled brakes and trust the dogs completely. They know exactly where they are going.
Day 5
Glass Igloo Night | Northern Lights from Bed | Snowshoeing
Morning snowshoeing through the silent Arctic birch forest, the most peaceful activity in Lapland. Afternoon transfer to your glass igloo, a heated thermal dome with a transparent ceiling designed specifically for Northern Lights viewing from your warm bed. Lie in bed at midnight and watch the Aurora Borealis dance green and purple above you without leaving the warmth. Overnight glass igloo.
π‘ Tip: Glass igloos have heated floors and triple-glazed thermal roofs so you stay warm while the Northern Lights perform overhead - set an alarm for 1 AM as this is often the peak activity time.
Day 6
Aurora Morning | Fly back to Helsinki | Departure
Final Arctic morning breakfast and last snow walk. Fly back to Helsinki for your international connection. Pick up Finnish chocolate, cloudberry jam, and Fazer sweets at the duty-free. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: Cloudberry jam and Finnish dark chocolate make the best Finnish souvenirs - find them at Fazer shops in Helsinki or at the airport duty-free.
