Day 1
Arrive Muscat | Drive to Nizwa | Nizwa Fort | Date Market
Arrive at Muscat International Airport and drive two hours inland to Nizwa, Oman's ancient capital and cultural heartland. Afternoon at the massive Nizwa Fort, the round tower of which dominates the city and gives extraordinary views from the summit over the date palm oases and the Hajar Mountains beyond. Browse the Nizwa souk for silver Omani khanjar daggers, handmade pottery, and the finest Omani dates. Evening at a traditional restaurant for shuwa, slow-cooked lamb marinated in spices and cooked underground in a clay pot. Overnight Nizwa.
π‘ Tip: The Nizwa Friday morning goat and cattle market at the old souk is one of the most authentic traditional markets in Arabia. Arrive by 7 AM to see the livestock trading before it ends by 10 AM.
Day 2
Drive to Jebel Shams | Wadi Nakhr Grand Canyon | Rim Walk | Sunset Camp
Drive 90 minutes into the Western Hajar Mountains to Jebel Shams, the highest peak in Oman at 3009 metres. Hike the Balcony Walk trail along the rim of Wadi Nakhr, the Grand Canyon of Arabia, a gorge 1000 metres deep and 12 kilometres long with abandoned stone villages clinging to the opposite cliff face. Sunset from the rim with the mountains turning red as the light fades. Camp overnight at the Jebel Shams plateau camp with extraordinary mountain views and cold star-filled nights. Overnight Jebel Shams.
π‘ Tip: Jebel Shams is cold at night even in summer, dropping to single digits after dark. Bring warm layers regardless of the season. The plateau camp provides blankets but a fleece is essential.
Day 3
Drive to Wadi Bani Khalid | Turquoise Rock Pools | Drive to Wahiba Sands
Drive three hours east through the Sharqiyah region to Wadi Bani Khalid, one of the most beautiful wadis in Oman and the most reliably flowing throughout the year. Swim in the extraordinary clear turquoise pools formed between enormous pale limestone boulders, with small fish visible in the crystal water below. Continue to the Wahiba Sands desert for a late afternoon 4x4 drive through the red dunes. Overnight desert camp in the Wahiba Sands.
π‘ Tip: Wadi Bani Khalid pools are deepest and clearest early in the morning before afternoon visitors arrive. The inner pools require a short climb through a narrow canyon above the main pools and are completely worth the extra effort.
Day 4
Wahiba Sands Sunrise | Camel Trek | Drive to Sur | Dhow Yard
Sunrise over the Wahiba dunes from the sand crest above camp, watching the shadows of the dune ridges shift as the sun rises. Optional camel trek through the early morning desert. Drive two hours east to Sur, one of Oman's most beautiful and historic port towns on the Indian Ocean. Visit the working dhow yard on the lagoon where traditional wooden sailing vessels are still constructed by hand using centuries-old methods without blueprints. Explore the old tower-flanked harbour. Overnight Sur.
π‘ Tip: The Sur dhow yard at Al Ayjah builds around five to ten traditional wooden dhows per year using the same hand tools and techniques used for centuries. Visit in the morning when the craftsmen are most active.
Day 5
Ras Al Jinz | Green Turtle Nesting | Night Tour | Dawn on the Beach
Drive south to Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, the largest green turtle nesting beach in the Arabian Sea and one of the most important in the Indian Ocean. Evening guided night tour to watch female turtles emerge from the sea to lay eggs in the sand, a process taking up to two hours. Guide torches reveal turtles weighing up to 150 kilograms digging nests and laying. Stay for the dawn when hatchlings scramble to the water. Overnight at the Ras Al Jinz reserve eco-hotel.
π‘ Tip: Green turtle nesting peaks from June to August but continues year-round. Book the night tour in advance as visitor numbers are strictly limited to minimise disturbance to the turtles.
Day 6
Drive back to Muscat | Bimmah Sinkhole | Departure
Drive back to Muscat along the coastal road stopping at the Bimmah Sinkhole, an extraordinary natural limestone collapse pool 40 metres wide and 20 metres deep filled with turquoise water right next to the sea. Swimming is permitted and the water is a beautiful mix of fresh and salt water. Continue to Muscat Airport for your departure. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: Bimmah Sinkhole is one of the most photographed natural sites in Oman and makes an excellent final stop. Arrive before 10 AM on weekdays for the fewest visitors.
