Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Amman | Citadel | Roman Theatre | Rainbow Street | Mansaf Dinner

Arrive at Queen Alia International Airport and transfer to your Amman hotel. Afternoon at the Amman Citadel on the highest hill in the city for the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, and panoramic views over the amphitheatre-like city of hills. Walk down to the 6000-seat Roman Theatre still used for concerts today. Evening on Rainbow Street, Amman's most cosmopolitan area, for mansaf, Jordan's national dish of lamb cooked in dried yoghurt sauce over rice. Overnight Amman.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Buy the Jordan Pass before arriving - it covers the visa fee and entry to over 40 attractions including Petra, and saves significant money.
Day 2

Jerash Roman Ruins | Drive to Petra | First Evening in the Ancient City

Morning at Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world with colonnaded streets, triumphal arches, and a hippodrome still hosting chariot demonstrations. Drive south 4 hours to Petra. Arrive in the late afternoon for the optional Petra by Night experience, the Siq passage lit by 1500 candles leading to the Treasury glowing in the dark. Overnight Petra.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Petra by Night runs Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings - booking is separate from the main Petra ticket and should be done in advance.
Day 3

Full Day Petra | The Siq | Treasury | Monastery | High Place of Sacrifice

Full day in Petra, the most extraordinary archaeological site in the Middle East. Walk the 1.2-km Siq gorge, the narrow canyon of red sandstone with walls up to 80 metres high, to the sudden reveal of the Treasury facade. Continue to the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street, and the Great Temple. Climb 800 steps to the Monastery, Ad Deir, even larger than the Treasury with views across the desert. Hike the High Place of Sacrifice for the best panoramic view over Petra. Overnight Petra.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Petra is enormous - a full day only covers the main route and monastery. Hire a local guide for the first hour at the entrance to orientate yourself and understand what you are seeing.
Day 4

Drive to Wadi Rum | 4x4 Desert Safari | Sunset Over Red Dunes | Camp Under Stars

Morning drive to Wadi Rum, the Valley of the Moon, the extraordinary red desert landscape of sandstone mountains, canyons, and dunes that was Lawrence of Arabia's base and the filming location for The Martian and Dune. Afternoon 4x4 jeep safari through the desert stopping at ancient Nabataean rock inscriptions, natural rock arches, and the red sand dunes at sunset. Overnight Bedouin camp under a canopy of stars with no light pollution for 100 km. Overnight Wadi Rum desert camp.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Wadi Rum's night sky is extraordinary - ask your camp for a blanket and lie outside away from the camp lights to see the Milky Way completely clearly.
Day 5

Wadi Rum Sunrise | Camel Ride | Drive to Dead Sea | Float in the Lowest Point on Earth

Sunrise in the desert before the jeep safari resumes in the cool morning air. Optional camel ride through the dunes before the heat builds. Drive 3 hours north to the Dead Sea, 430 metres below sea level, the lowest point on earth. Float effortlessly on the 33 percent salinity water - human beings genuinely cannot sink here. Cover yourself in the famous black mineral mud from the shoreline and rinse off in the buoyant water. Overnight Dead Sea resort.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Do not shave or have any cuts before swimming in the Dead Sea - the extreme salinity causes intense burning in any open skin. Keep your eyes completely away from the water.
Day 6

Dead Sea Morning Float | Drive to Amman | Departure

Final morning float in the Dead Sea at sunrise when the light across the water to the West Bank hills is extraordinary and the shoreline is empty. Drive 1 hour back to Amman for transfer to Queen Alia International Airport. Pick up Dead Sea mineral products, Jordanian olive oil soap, and za'atar spice mix as souvenirs. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Dead Sea mineral products are sold everywhere in Jordan - buy them at the resort shop or a Jordanian pharmacy rather than tourist souvenir shops for the best quality.
