Kashmir in Winter

Six days in Kashmir in winter is one of the most magical experiences in India. The Dal Lake freezes at the edges. The chinar trees stand bare and architectural against the Himalayan backdrop. Gulmarg becomes one of the highest ski resorts in the world with 15 kilometres of piste and a gondola reaching 3979 metres. The old city of Srinagar takes on a quiet dignity under snow. And a kangri charcoal fire basket under a pheran gown is the most effective winter warming system known to humankind.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Srinagar | Snow-Covered Dal Lake | Mughal Gardens in Winter | Houseboat

Arrive at Srinagar Airport and transfer to your traditional houseboat on Dal Lake. The winter lake in the morning is utterly still with mist rising and the Zabarwan mountains reflected in glassy water. Afternoon visit to Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, the Mughal gardens under snow with the geometric parterres outlined in white, completely tourist-free in winter. Evening Kashmiri wazwan dinner on the houseboat with a kangri fire basket keeping the dining room warm. Overnight houseboat.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Kashmiri houseboats are heated by bukhari stoves burning pine wood and are surprisingly warm even in minus temperatures. Request an extra kangri, the charcoal hand warmer inside a woven willow basket, for sleeping.
Day 2

Srinagar | Old City Winter Walk | Khanqah Shah Hamdan | Floating Market in Snow

Morning shikara ride on the Dal Lake at dawn, the most atmospheric time in winter, past the vegetable sellers breaking ice to paddle their boats to market. Walk through the old city to the Khanqah Shah Hamdan, the 14th-century wooden mosque on the Dal Lake waterfront, and through the bazaars of Lal Chowk where shawl merchants display cashmere and pashmina in the shop doorways. Afternoon at a papier-mache workshop watching craftsmen create the intricate lacquered Kashmir crafts. Overnight houseboat.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The floating vegetable market on Dal Lake is most active between 6 and 8 AM in winter when the light on the ice and the mist makes it extraordinarily atmospheric. Ask your houseboat shikara to take you there at dawn.
Day 3

Drive to Gulmarg | Gondola to Apharwat | Skiing | Winter Sports

Two-hour drive to Gulmarg, one of the highest ski resorts in the world at 2650 metres. Take the Gondola cable car to Kongdori at 3050 metres for Phase 1 skiing on long runs through pine forest, then the Phase 2 Gondola to Apharwat Peak at 3979 metres for advanced piste and off-piste skiing on untouched powder snow. The runs at Gulmarg are long, uncrowded, and magnificent. Non-skiers can take a horse-drawn sledge through the snow-covered meadows and try snow tubing. Return to Srinagar. Overnight houseboat.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Gulmarg ski season runs from December to March with the best powder snow in January and February. Ski equipment hire and lessons are available at the gondola base. Beginners should stay in the Kongdori area for the gentler slopes.
Day 4

Gulmarg Full Day | St Mary's Church | Frozen Alpather Lake | Snowshoeing

Full day at Gulmarg with a second ski day or a snowshoeing excursion. Walk to the old St Mary's Church, a beautifully preserved colonial-era stone church buried to its window frames in snow. Guided snowshoe trek to the frozen Alpather Lake at 4000 metres, a high-altitude lake completely frozen in winter with extraordinary Himalayan panoramas. Return to Srinagar for overnight on the houseboat. Overnight houseboat.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Alpather Lake snowshoe trek requires a guide and takes four to five hours return from Gulmarg. The views of the Himalayan peaks from the frozen lakeshore on a clear day are completely extraordinary.
Day 5

Drive to Pahalgam | Betaab Valley in Snow | Lidder River | Return Srinagar

Two-hour drive to Pahalgam through apple orchards bare and geometric under snow. Visit Betaab Valley, the famous Bollywood film location, in complete winter silence with the Baisaran meadows covered in deep powder. Walk along the frozen-edged Lidder River through snow-covered pines, a completely different landscape from the summer version. Drive back to Srinagar for a farewell wazwan dinner with the full spread of gushtaba, rista, and roghan josh. Overnight Srinagar hotel.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Pahalgam in winter has almost no tourists and the scenery is extraordinary. The road is generally open but check conditions before driving as snowfall can temporarily block the Anantnag route.
Day 6

Final Srinagar Morning | Kashmiri Crafts Shopping | Departure

Final morning shikara ride on the lake and last walk through the old city bazaars for Kashmiri saffron with KPS certification, pure pashmina shawls, and walnut wood crafts. Drive to Srinagar Airport for departure. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Srinagar Airport has strict security protocols and requires arriving at least two and a half hours before departure. Security checks are thorough and the terminal can get crowded during flight peaks.
