Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Kigali | Genocide Memorial | City Tour

Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a deeply moving tribute to the 800,000 Tutsis killed in 100 days in 1994 - essential context for understanding modern Rwanda. Walk through the immaculately clean streets of Kigali, consistently ranked Africa's cleanest city. Evening at a rooftop restaurant with views over the thousand hills. Overnight Kigali.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Genocide Memorial is emotionally intense - allow at least 2 hours and take your time with the exhibits.
Day 2

Drive to Volcanoes National Park | Golden Monkey Trekking

2-hour drive northwest through spectacular terraced hillside farmland to the Virunga volcanoes. Afternoon golden monkey trek in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park - these playful, vivid primates are found only in the Virunga highlands. Evening briefing for tomorrow's gorilla trek. Overnight Musanze lodge.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Golden monkey trekking is significantly cheaper than gorilla permits and still an extraordinary wildlife experience - highly recommended.
Day 3

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in the Virunga Volcanoes

The centrepiece of the trip. Trek into the Volcanoes National Park with rangers to find one of Rwanda's 12 habituated gorilla families. The trek can take 1 to 6 hours through dense bamboo and hagenia forest at altitude up to 4500 metres. One magical hour with the gorilla family - watching a 200-kg silverback move through the forest metres from you is an experience that stays forever. Overnight Musanze.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Rwanda's gorilla permits cost 1500 USD - significantly more than Uganda but Rwanda's habituated groups tend to be more accessible and the experience is exceptional.
Day 4

Drive to Nyungwe Forest | Canopy Walk

4-hour drive south through Rwanda's spectacular hills to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. Afternoon canopy walkway suspended 50 metres above the forest floor with views over the ancient treetops and the chance to spot black and white colobus monkeys swinging below. Overnight Nyungwe forest lodge.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Nyungwe is home to 13 primate species including chimpanzees - ask your guide about the chimp tracking option if you have energy.
Day 5

Chimpanzee Trekking | Drive to Lake Kivu

Early morning chimpanzee trek in the Cyamudongo Forest, a small satellite forest of Nyungwe known for its habituated chimp community. Afternoon drive to Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes sitting at 1460 metres on the Congo border. Boat ride on the lake to a small island for sundowners. Overnight Kivu lakeside hotel.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Lake Kivu is one of the few places in the world where you can safely swim in a Great African Lake - the water is beautiful and calm.
Day 6

Lake Kivu Morning | Drive to Kigali | Departure

Relaxed morning on the lake shore before the 3-hour drive back to Kigali. Last shopping at the Caplaki Handicrafts Village for imigongo geometric art, woven baskets, and local coffee. Transfer to Kigali International Airport. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Rwanda's woven baskets and imigongo cow dung geometric paintings are genuinely beautiful and unique souvenirs - buy directly from the artisans at Caplaki.
