Day 1
Arrive Kigali | Genocide Memorial | Kimironko Market | Rooftop Dinner
Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the deeply moving tribute to the 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu killed in 100 days in 1994. Spend at least two hours with the exhibits. Walk through the Kimironko Market, Kigali's largest and most colourful neighbourhood market, for local produce, fabric, and crafts. Evening dinner at a rooftop restaurant with views over the thousand hills of the country's capital. Overnight Kigali.
π‘ Tip: The Genocide Memorial is essential context for understanding modern Rwanda. Take your time with each gallery and do not rush. The outdoor memorial gardens are beautiful and peaceful.
Day 2
Drive to Volcanoes National Park | Golden Monkey Trek | Village Walk
Two-hour drive northwest through spectacular terraced hill farmland to the base of the Virunga volcanoes. Afternoon golden monkey trek into the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park for these uniquely vivid, playful primates found only in the Virunga highlands. They move fast and are endlessly entertaining. Evening guided walk through a local community near the park boundary to meet farming families and learn about life alongside mountain gorillas. Overnight Musanze lodge.
π‘ Tip: Golden monkey trekking costs significantly less than gorilla permits and still provides an extraordinary wildlife encounter in beautiful bamboo forest. It is an excellent warm-up for the following day.
Day 3
Mountain Gorilla Trek in the Virunga Volcanoes
The centrepiece of the trip. Trek into Volcanoes National Park early in the morning with rangers and trackers to find one of Rwanda's 12 habituated gorilla families. The trek can take anywhere from one to six hours through dense bamboo and hagenia forest at altitudes up to 4500 metres. The one unforgettable hour with the gorilla family watching a silverback move through the forest metres from where you stand stays forever. Overnight Musanze.
π‘ Tip: Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost 1500 USD. Book at least six months in advance as all permits are strictly limited. The experience is considered by many experienced travellers to be the most powerful wildlife encounter in Africa.
Day 4
Drive to Akagera National Park | Afternoon Safari | Lake Ihema Boat Cruise
Three-hour drive east across Rwanda to Akagera National Park on the Tanzanian border. Akagera is a savannah ecosystem that was completely different from the gorilla highlands, with open grassland, papyrus swamps, and rolling hills. Afternoon game drive for lions, leopards, and elephants that were reintroduced after years of absence. Evening boat cruise on Lake Ihema along banks lined with hippos and crocodiles. Overnight Akagera lodge.
π‘ Tip: Akagera National Park was restored after the genocide years through a remarkable conservation partnership. It now has all Big Five and is one of the conservation success stories of Africa.
Day 5
Akagera Full Day | Black Rhino Tracking | Bird Watching
Full day in Akagera starting with a dawn game drive for lion activity on the plains. Mid-morning guided walk in a designated area with a ranger for close-up views of the landscape. Akagera is one of the best birdwatching destinations in East Africa with over 500 recorded species including the shoebill stork in the papyrus swamps. Late afternoon drive to the park's highest viewpoint for panoramic views over the lake and savannah. Overnight Akagera lodge.
π‘ Tip: Ask your guide specifically about shoebill stork sightings in the papyrus swamps. This extraordinary prehistoric-looking bird is one of Africa's most sought-after species and Akagera is one of the better places to find it.
Day 6
Drive to Lake Kivu | Kayaking | Departure
Three-hour drive west to Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes sitting at 1460 metres on the Congo border with extraordinarily clear water and a forested island-dotted shoreline. Morning kayaking on the lake between small islands with fishing communities. Afternoon swim from the beach, one of the few Great African Lakes safe for swimming. Drive back to Kigali for your international departure. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: Lake Kivu is remarkably safe for swimming unlike most African Great Lakes. The water is clear, calm, and at a comfortable temperature even in the cooler season.
