Day 1
Arrive Kilimanjaro | Arusha | Safari Briefing and Equipment
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha. Afternoon briefing with your guide to understand the route, wildlife patterns for the current month, and what to expect. Visit Arusha National Park briefly for a short afternoon walk with views of Mount Meru and a first introduction to African wildlife. Stock up on any supplies and snacks for the drives ahead. Overnight Arusha.
π‘ Tip: Arusha is the safari capital of East Africa. Use your afternoon here to confirm all arrangements with your operator and ask your guide specifically about current migration and predator locations.
Day 2
Drive to Tarangire National Park | Elephant Herds | Ancient Baobabs
Three-hour drive south to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania's most underrated wildlife areas. Full afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River where enormous herds of elephants congregate during the dry season, some numbering in the hundreds, moving between the ancient baobab trees that dot the golden landscape. Lions, leopards, oryx, and hundreds of bird species complete the scene. Overnight Tarangire tented camp.
π‘ Tip: Tarangire is often skipped on shorter itineraries. It has some of the finest elephant viewing in all of Africa and the baobab landscape is unlike anywhere else.
Day 3
Tarangire Morning Drive | Drive to Central Serengeti | Afternoon Plains Drive
Early morning game drive in Tarangire for predator activity around the river. Drive four hours to the Central Serengeti, the heart of Tanzania's most famous park and one of the greatest ecosystems on earth. Afternoon game drive across the open Seronera plains, the area with the highest year-round density of lions and leopards in the entire Serengeti. Overnight central Serengeti lodge or camp.
π‘ Tip: The Central Serengeti around Seronera has the most consistently good wildlife viewing regardless of the season. Ask your guide to find a leopard in a sausage tree, where they commonly rest with their kills above.
Day 4
Full Serengeti Day | Cheetah Territory | Wildebeest Herds | Sundowner
Full day in the Serengeti starting before dawn for the golden-hour game drive when cheetahs are actively hunting on the open plains. The Serengeti has the highest concentration of cheetahs in Africa. Midday rest at camp during the heat. Afternoon drive to follow the wildebeest and zebra herds that move continuously across the grassland according to rain patterns. Sundowner drinks on the savannah watching the plains darken. Overnight Serengeti.
π‘ Tip: Ask your guide to prioritise finding a cheetah hunt at dawn. The open Serengeti plains are the only place where you can see a full cheetah chase over a long distance.
Day 5
Northern Serengeti | Migration River Crossing if in Season | Mara River
Drive to the northern Serengeti near the Mara River, the location of the dramatic wildebeest river crossings during the migration season from July to October. Even outside migration the northern Serengeti has outstanding big cat sightings and enormous resident elephant herds. Afternoon at a kopje, the rocky granite outcrops where lions rest and survey their territory. Overnight northern Serengeti camp.
π‘ Tip: River crossings happen when herds are ready, not on schedule. Position near the river crossing points in the early morning and wait patiently. The wait is always worth it.
Day 6
Drive to Ngorongoro Crater Rim | Crater Rim Walk | Sunset Views
Morning drive from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, stopping at the crater rim at 2200 metres for the first view down into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, 19 kilometres across and home to 25,000 animals. Walk the crater rim in the late afternoon with extraordinary views of the flamingo-pink lake, wildebeest herds, and elephant bulls visible from above. Overnight crater rim lodge.
π‘ Tip: The first view of the Ngorongoro Crater from the rim is consistently described by experienced travellers as one of the most powerful moments in any safari. Give yourself time to simply stand and take it in.
Day 7
Full Ngorongoro Crater Day | Big Five in the Caldera | Drive to Arusha | Departure
Descend into the crater at dawn for a full day game drive inside this extraordinary natural enclosure. The crater has the highest density of predators in Africa. Lions rest in the short grass, leopards patrol the forest edge, and the crater's famous black rhinos move between the acacia thickets. Large flamingo flocks wade the soda lake. Drive back to Arusha after the crater ascent for your international departure. End of tour.
π‘ Tip: Vehicles must leave the crater floor by 6 PM. Plan your drive to spend the early morning and late afternoon at the most productive areas and rest at a picnic site during midday.
