Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Colombo | Drive to Sigiriya | Spice Garden Stop

Arrive at Colombo Airport and drive four hours northeast to the Cultural Triangle with a stop at a roadside spice garden near Matale to see cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper growing together. Arrive near Sigiriya by late afternoon and check in to your lodge. Evening walk around the base of the rock as the sandstone walls turn orange in the setting sun. Dinner with Sri Lankan rice and curry. Overnight near Sigiriya.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The drive from Colombo to Sigiriya takes around four hours with stops. Leave before 8 AM to avoid Colombo traffic and arrive in time for a relaxed afternoon.
Day 2

Sigiriya Rock Fortress | Pidurangala Rock | Afternoon at Leisure

Climb Sigiriya at 7 AM before the heat builds. Pass the world-famous Sigiriya Maidens frescoes painted directly onto the rock face and the massive Lion Paw entrance carved from stone before reaching the summit plateau with ancient royal water gardens and a 360-degree view over the jungle plains. Afternoon climb of Pidurangala Rock nearby, a lesser-known vantage point that gives the best full view of Sigiriya rising from the canopy. Overnight near Sigiriya.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Pidurangala is the single best place to photograph Sigiriya as a whole. The final section requires scrambling over boulders but the view from the flat rock at the top is extraordinary.
Day 3

Dambulla Cave Temples | Minneriya Elephant Safari | Drive to Kandy

Morning at the Dambulla Cave Temple complex, five interconnected caves carved into a granite outcrop with 157 Buddha statues and ceiling murals painted onto the rock two thousand years ago. Late morning jeep safari in Minneriya National Park for the wild elephant gathering around the reservoir. Drive three hours south to Kandy through rubber and spice plantation country. Evening puja ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth. Overnight Kandy.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Dambulla shoes must be removed at the base of the hill before the long walk up, not at the cave entrance. Carry a bag for your footwear.
Day 4

Kandy | Temple of the Tooth | Peradeniya Botanical Gardens | Cultural Show

Morning at the inner sanctum of the Temple of the Tooth during the 9:30 AM puja when the golden casket housing the sacred relic is briefly displayed. Two hours at the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, 60 hectares of extraordinary tropical plants including the great avenue of royal palms, the bamboo grove, and the remarkable double coconut palm from the Seychelles. Evening traditional Kandyan cultural show with fire dancing, stilt walkers, and the spectacular Ves dancers in full regalia. Overnight Kandy.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Peradeniya is one of the finest botanical gardens in Asia and is surprisingly uncrowded on weekday mornings. Allow at least two hours to do it proper justice.
Day 5

Scenic Train to Nuwara Eliya | Tea Factory | Gregory Lake Walk

Board the famous hill country train from Kandy for the three-hour journey through continuous tea plantations, cloud forest tunnels, and dramatic valley views to Nuwara Eliya at 1868 metres. Check in to a colonial-era plantation hotel and take a guided tour of a working tea factory to see leaves being withered, rolled, fermented, and dried. Late afternoon stroll around Gregory Lake with mist rolling off the surrounding hills. Overnight Nuwara Eliya.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Sit on the right side of the train travelling from Kandy south for the best valley views, and keep the window open for fresh mountain air.
Day 6

Horton Plains | World's End Cliff | Ella Nine Arch Bridge | Drive to Colombo

Early drive to Horton Plains National Park for the World's End viewpoint, a sheer 870-metre cliff edge with views to the southern coastal plains on clear mornings. Drive to the charming village of Ella for the famous Nine Arch Bridge where colonial-era tea trains cross above a jungle canyon. Final drive back to Colombo for departure. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: World's End clouds over by 9 AM on most days. The park opens at 6 AM and arriving at opening is completely essential. Waiting for a later slot is not worth it.
