Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Hanoi | Old Quarter Walk | Hoan Kiem Lake | Egg Coffee

Arrive at Noi Bai International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the Old Quarter. Afternoon walk through the 36 ancient trade streets of the Old Quarter, each street named for the goods once sold there. Visit Hoan Kiem Lake and the red Huc Bridge to the Temple of the Jade Mountain. Evening egg coffee at Cafe Giang, the inventor of this Hanoi speciality. Overnight Hanoi.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Crossing the street in Hanoi is an art form - walk slowly and steadily without stopping and the motorbikes will flow around you.
Day 2

Hanoi | Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum | Temple of Literature | Street Food Tour

Morning at Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where Vietnam's revolutionary leader lies in state - strict dress code and no photography inside. Visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university founded in 1070, with beautiful gardens and pavilions. Evening street food walking tour through the Old Quarter for bun cha, pho, banh mi, and fresh spring rolls. Overnight Hanoi.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed on Mondays, Fridays, and for all of October and November for maintenance - check before planning your day.
Day 3

Drive to Halong Bay | Board Cruise | Kayaking in Limestone Caves

3-hour drive to Halong Bay and board your overnight cruise through 2000 limestone islands rising from emerald water. Afternoon kayaking into hidden lagoons and sea caves, swimming off the boat's sundeck, and watching the islands change colour at sunset. Sunset cocktails on the top deck as the sky turns orange. Overnight on the cruise.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Choose a mid-range or premium cruise for Halong Bay - budget boats are overcrowded and the experience is significantly better on a quality vessel.
Day 4

Halong Bay Sunrise | Fishing Village | Return to Hanoi | Fly to Da Nang

Early morning sunrise on the bay before visiting a floating fishing village by kayak or bamboo boat. Brunch on board as you cruise back to port. Drive to Hanoi and take an evening flight to Da Nang. Transfer to Hoi An, 30 km south. Overnight Hoi An.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Hoi An is best explored on a bicycle - hire one from your guesthouse for around 2 USD per day and the entire ancient town is easily reachable.
Day 5

Hoi An Ancient Town | Japanese Bridge | Tailor Street | Lantern Evening

Full day in Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage town of merchant houses, temples, and tailor shops frozen in the 15th century. Walk through the Ancient Town visiting the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, Chinese Assembly Halls, and the old merchant quarter. Afternoon have something tailored - suits, dresses, and shoes can be made in 24 hours. Evening lantern boat ride on the Thu Bon River as the town glows with hundreds of silk lanterns. Overnight Hoi An.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Hoi An tailors are excellent but give clear specifications, ask to see samples, and always request a fitting before paying in full.
Day 6

My Son Sanctuary | Marble Mountains | Fly to Ho Chi Minh City

Morning at My Son Sanctuary, a cluster of ancient Hindu Cham towers in a jungle valley, UNESCO-listed and Vietnam's answer to Angkor. Visit the Marble Mountains, five limestone and marble hills south of Da Nang with temples, caves, and panoramic views over China Beach. Afternoon flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Overnight HCMC.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Visit My Son early in the morning before the heat and tour groups arrive - the jungle setting and ancient towers are most atmospheric at 7 to 9 AM.
Day 7

Cu Chi Tunnels | War Remnants Museum | Ben Thanh Market

Morning at the Cu Chi Tunnels, the extraordinary underground network used by Viet Cong fighters with crawl-through tunnel sections you can experience yourself. Afternoon at the War Remnants Museum, an intense but essential account of the American War from the Vietnamese perspective. Evening at Ben Thanh Market for street food and last-minute shopping. Overnight HCMC.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The War Remnants Museum is confronting and important - allow 2 hours and approach it with openness to the Vietnamese experience of the war.
Day 8

Mekong Delta Day Trip | Boat Through Canals | Departure

Morning Mekong Delta boat trip through narrow canal networks, floating markets, coconut candy workshops, and rice paddies - a glimpse of Vietnam's rural south that feels entirely different from the cities. Return to Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to Tan Son Nhat International Airport for your return flight. End of tour.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The Mekong Delta is best visited on a 1-day or 2-day trip from HCMC - choose a small group tour that uses smaller boats to reach the narrower canals.
